Always a risk.

Description

Why do people post watermarks on their art?
Why do people post :icondonotplz::iconmyartplz: and the like in their artist's comments?

They know there are people who will want to use their stuff.

The Internet is a huge place and a risky venture. Someone might come across your work and say, steal it and claim as theirs? The sad part is, there almost always will be someone who uses your work withouht you even knowing about it.

Now if they're nice (hopefully), politely ask them to credit you or take it down.

There's only one issue- how do you know if they're willing to listen to you?
The worst thing you could do is act immature and whine to them about taking them down. You have to consider the possibility that they may be civilized humans and not stupid animals. Screaming and cursing them out will make them less likely to listen to you.

Example: "U DUMBFACK, TAKE MY STUFF DOWN PEICE OF SHET OR I WILL REPORT U!!11"

The same could be applied if you are talking to an art thief. They could report you for harrassment!

Moral of the story: Think first. Type later.

Second, because you didn't put some type of disclaimer (ie "ask for use" "Don't use without permission"), the visiting Web surfers will see your work as something they can use freely.

The Internet's dangerous. If you want to improve yourself, you've got to take a risk, right?

I think it should go without saying that you need to ask the artist before using their work. If you make something, you automatically own the copyright to that (in the case of fan art, you only own the art piece and not the work that it's based on).

On deviantart, you can actually put a creative commons license on your art (which is what I do). If you don't even check what the license is before uploading the piece on your own DA, then damn right the artist should whoop your ass (er, figuratively, I mean...). And what about people that trace people's art? The watermark would be pointless.

Of course, the internet is not the safest place when it comes to piracy or privacy, etc. It's just like how living in a city means that you might be at risk of being mugged. Does that mean that it's your fault if someone steals from you? No, of course not. Even if you didn't take any precautions, a crime was still committed against you.

I get what you're trying to say, but I think in the case of art theft, the staff at DA would side with the victim of that crime, even if that person (rightly) confronts them about that.
